Where Should a Desk Be Placed in a Bedroom?

For the majority of people, working from home is a dream come true. Forget the extra early alarm and hustle and bustle commuting to the office, you can now enjoy a slower morning routine, start your workday in the comfort of your own environment, and create a workspace exactly how you want it.

But while that is promising, it isn't always ideal, especially if all the other rooms are taken and you have to work in your bedroom. One poor decision and you'll end up with a cramped bedroom and a desk that you'll despise.

This is why we’re here to help! In this blog, we provide you with the best tips and strategies for positioning a desk in a bedroom, helping you make the most of your space while maintaining comfort and most importantly, focus.

Where Should a Desk Be Placed in a Bedroom?

Here are some tips to determine the ideal desk placement in a bedroom:

1. Near a Window

If you don’t think you’ll get distracted by the view outside, placing a desk by a window can have many benefits, especially if you’re using the desk to study or work.

The major advantage being that you’ll be able to get as much natural light as possible, which has been shown to improve mood, boost productivity, and even reduce eye strain. Did you know that natural light also helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, which in turn keeps you more alert during the day and supports better sleep at night? Pretty cool, aye!

Working near a window can also make your workspace feel much more open and vibrant, which, for a lot of people, will boost motivation and make working less of a chore.

As mentioned, we only recommend this arrangement if you know you won’t get distracted by the view outside when you're at your desk all day.

This leads us nicely onto the next tip…

2. In a Quiet Corner

If distractions are your worst enemy, then a quiet corner would be the perfect place to set up a desk in your bedroom.

A corner layout will provide you with a quiet, secluded spot to allow you to get work done without any visual distractions (as walls limit visual distractions), as well as making great use of unoccupied space.

Speaking of space, the best way to optimise your floor area, especially if you have a small room, is to invest in a corner desk. These are desks with an L-shaped design that allows them to take up less space than a usual triangle desk.

At Friska Desks, we offer a range of premium height adjustable corner desks in a range of sizes, colours and customisable extras to make your corner desk uniquely yours.

The Stockholm Platinum Polished Standing Corner Desk is an exceptional cutting-edge corner desk, featuring a highly polished mirror chrome finish to add a touch of glitz to your WFH set-up without compromising its durability or ultra-smooth operation.

3. Away From the Bed

Another important tip when deciding where to place your desk is away from your bed. This is especially important for those who’re partial to a mid-day shut eye!

If your desk is placed too close to the bed, it’s very easy for the line between your workspace and relaxation space to become blurred. And when this happens, it naturally makes it much harder to mentally separate work tasks from downtime, potentially leading to stress and difficulty winding down at the end of the day.

Keeping the desk away from the bed therefore reinforces boundaries, ensuring you maintain a better work-life balance.

4. Near Power Outlets

It goes without saying that if you’re using a laptop, monitor or anything electronic, you must set up your desk near power outlets. Positioning your desk too far from an outlet could not only mean that you struggle using these machines, but it’ll also result in a tangled mess of extension cords, multiple power strips, and cables that can create both a safety hazard and a distracting eyesore.

Ideally, you should place your desk near an outlet or in a spot where a power strip can easily reach without being in the way or creating a mess.

We highly recommend looking at getting cable management solutions such as cable clips, trays, or sleeves to keep wires organised and out of sight.

Where Should a Desk be Placed in an Office Environment?

Proper desk placement is also just as important in the office as it is if working from home.

In addition to considering natural light sources and easily accessible power outlets (as mentioned earlier), here are some helpful tips for determining the ideal desk placement in an office environment:

1. Away From High Traffic Areas

In offices, you’ll find that high-traffic areas are often filled with noise, movement, and people socialising/interacting, which can be pretty distracting.

If you purposely position your desk away from these areas, you're less likely to be interrupted by foot traffic, conversations, or phone calls, allowing you to stay focused on your own work.

2. Optimise Ergonomics

Regardless of desk placement, you want to make sure that your desk follows ergonomic best practices

This means that you should ensure there is enough space for other office members to adjust their chairs, stretch their legs, and maintain proper posture

If you’re a business owner/ manager, avoid placing desks too close together to prevent employees from feeling cramped, and provide adjustable furniture to accommodate individual needs.

Standing desks and ergonomic chairs are a great way to ensure you or your employees are comfortable throughout the workday.

3. Align Desks with Workflow

In an office environment, it’s essential that desk placement supports the natural flow of work and interactions between departments.

By this we mean, collaborative teams might benefit from being grouped together in shared spaces, or perhaps customer-facing roles like sales or support might benefit from desks being closer to meeting rooms or phones.

4. Remember to Comply with Safety and Accessibility Guidelines

Lastly, in an office environment, there are various occupational health and safety standards, so it’s really important that desk placement adheres to these.

This includes guidelines like maintaining clear walkways, having proper spacing between desks, and ensuring the office has sufficient lighting. Desks should also be positioned to accommodate accessibility needs, such as wheelchair users or employees with mobility challenges.
